Dear Diary,
I can still remember the SLP that didn’t protect me. I grew up in speech therapy rooms, where they were supposed to be my safe place. My place without danger. It only took one speech-language pathologist, not thinking correctly, to make this no longer my case; this is my story.
I was bullied in my childhood years. It’s what every parent hates to hear, but this was my reality. People didn’t know why I spoke the way I spoke; I mean, I didn’t even know what to tell them. But my SLP should’ve been the one to protect me, however, they didn’t.
One day my SLP brings in a person into the room that was bullying me, and I didn’t know why he was there. I didn’t feel comfortable asking. We would go through speech practices in front of the kid for him to mock me, name calls me, and act like he was going to jump over to me.
The SLP did nothing but say stop one useless time and allowed the rest to continue. I would walk out of there hurt and not understanding, while they would label me “Not wanting to participate.” I didn’t feel safe. How can I work in a place where I didn’t feel safe?
Not all SLP’s are built the same. I’m happy for mine that has rebuilt my trust and shown me I can rebuild that trust. Your child’s SLP should be one of their biggest advocates, friend, and protector.
From,
Jordan Christian
