When I was a child and was overwhelmed, I would emotionally shut down due to the complex nature of my speech disorder. If I wasn’t able to articulate what I wanted to say, and I kept on trying, this would result in an emotional shutdown. You may be asking- what is an emotional shutdown? Then keep on reading.
What is an “emotional shutdown”?
The way I like to describe an emotional shutdown is that your brain is so overwhelmed by emotions you don’t know how to process. To cope, we temporarily shut down our emotions because we no longer want to feel them.
Why does this happen in individuals with Apraxia?
There are several reasons that I could list. Each case has its own uniqueness to it. I mean, really, two cases of Apraxia are never really the same. I’ve found the main common core reason for emotional shutdowns is we want to get our thoughts out so severely. When we are unable to, we can feel trapped inside our own minds. With this separation from the outside world and unable to connect with it, people have a range of emotions from sad, angry, frustrated, sad, to even envy people who don’t have to put effort into their speech; because of their speech comes naturally.
How did I go from having emotional shutdowns to now being more likely to shake it off?
I’ve found processing my own emotions while validating them is vital for me. If I’m able to process my emotions, I won’t go straight to shutting down. How did I learn this? Therapy. Therapy has taught me how to rewire my thinking processes when it comes to my speech disorder. In specific, I’ve found a lot of benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Your brain is an organ, just like any other organ in your body. If your heart is racing, are you going to keep on running until you pass out? No! You’re going to pause, refuel and charge, and continue. The same goes for your brain. We need to pause, rethink, refuel, and charge and continue. One of my favorite sayings at the moment is, “You don’t have to have the same brain you were born with.” We can work through these difficult emotions, and we can show our brains we can handle whatever it throws at us. Because our brain is not, and was never our enemy.
